Positive Choice Living 2007-2008:

Substance-Free Lifestyle Floor

The laws prohibiting possession, use, or sale of illegal drugs, the underage possession or use of alcohol, and the non-smoking policy are enforced throughout the residence halls; however, this substance-free floor offers an additional measure of support for individuals who choose not to drink, use tobacco, smoke or use other drugs (illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia, or illegally obtained prescription medications).

Whether students choose this floor based on personal or family history, religious beliefs, or wanting a substance-free environment, they will find themselves in an environment with less peer pressure and a greater focus on having fun and enjoying college without the use of controlled substances.

The power of this program is that community members voluntarily choose substance-free housing, and they are committed to that choice as significant to their success at DU. Students who want to live in substance-free housing are required to sign a commitment, agreeing not to use or bring any alcohol, drugs, or tobacco substances into the community and also agree not to return to the community under the influence and not to bring friends into the community who are under the influence. If an individual does not maintain his or her commitment to the substance-free community, HRE staff may require students to move to a different floor.

da Vinci Community, Johnson- McFarlane Hall

We are very excited to again offer the daVinci Community as an option for the 2007-2008 academic year. Johnson Hall will house the da Vinci Community, a collection of first-year students devoted to experiencing college life within a community of scholars. This is an opportunity to live with students devoted to maximizing their academic experience at DU. Unlike the Honors community in Centennial Halls, the da Vinci Community will not be tied directly to an academic component. Instead, community members will sign a community agreement that will address a commitment to sustaining a quieter, substance free lifestyle in the hall and a standard of community ownership and self-governance. Programs offered will integrate the on-campus living experience with social, intellectual and cultural pursuits and honor the diverse intellectual, cultural and spiritual gifts of all students.
